The Adventures of Louise Arner Boyd, Marcie Miller

Marcie Miller from the Marin History Museum will provide insight into the colorful DAR pioneer Louise Arner Boyd - an heiress, adventurer, and explorer. Not content to settle into her role as San Francisco debutante and socialite, Louise led and funded scientific expeditions (to which she always brought champagne) and contributed to the WWII effort by working on secret assignments for the U.S. Army. An April field trip is being planned to the beautiful, historic San Rafael estate of this illustrious figure. Please bring refreshments to share.

Taverns of the American Revolution, Adrian Covert

A lot of boozing and schmoozing went on in some of America’s most historic watering holes, which also served as the public meeting houses that played a crucial role for the founding fathers in the struggle for independence. Rather than a retelling of the Revolutionary War, Author Adrian Covert will regale us with trivia and anecdotes about the drinking habits of colonial Americans and highlight some of the more than 20 surviving taverns. In honor of Presidents’ Day, we’ll be serving a cocktail from Adrian’s book. Please bring refreshments to share.

America’s First Suffrage March & the San Francisco Women Who Led It, Evelyn Rose

Historian Evelyn Rose will present the story of the San Francisco women of the California Equal Suffrage Association, leading up to what is believed to be the first suffrage march in America in 1908 (12 years before the ratification of the 19th Amendment). Early use of textiles as a way to help raise awareness of these emboldened women’s cause to win their equal rights will also be discussed. Please bring refreshments to share.

Depression-Era Art of the Bay Area, Betty & Nicholas Veronico

In an illustrated presentation, Authors Betty and Nicholas Veronico, co-authors of Depression-era Sculpture of the Bay Area and Depression-era Murals of the Bay Area, will present a tour of San Francisco’s and the Bay Area’s best art from the era.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal art programs brought relief to many talented artists through the Works Progress Administration plus the then-forthcoming Golden Gate International Exposition (1939-1940) employed many local artists to provide art and sculpture for the fair. We’re so fortunate that San Francisco’s rich legacy of New Deal art adorns the walls and halls of many public spaces while sculpture, created by some of the nation’s greatest artists, is on display throughout the region – free for the public to enjoy. Please bring refreshments to share.
